Calderdale IDENTITY Youth Group

Identity Logo

The youth group offers  1:1 confidential support and advice to all Calderdale LGBTQ young people regarding sexuality, home and school concerns and any other issues or worries they may have. We offer the opportunity to meet on a 1:1 basis with one of our workers before attending the group sessions.

The group itself is run by members of staff and volunteers that are all selected by the young people and that are all experienced to deal with and provide advice on any sexuality issues. We understand that meeting new LGBTQ young people can be a worrying time and not everybody might be willing to come to the group right away.

We offer a safe space to meet and connect with other LGBTQ young people, to build confidence and self-esteem and join in with some of our activities including:

  • Pool and snooker
  • Karaoke
  • Arts and crafts
  • Cooking, baking and refreshments
  • Board/card games
  • RC cars
  • Life skills including access to information and resources
  • Planned residential trips

We accept referrals from professionals and self-referrals from young people.

I am asexual and I have been attending group since November 2014 when my friend suggested I attend. I haven’t really had a problem with people bullying or accepting my sexuality but I sometimes wonder how much people really understand. Group is good as I have made new friends, have a safe space to hang out and I get to partake in activities such as bowling and the residential so it has given me the opportunity to do things which I may not have ordinarily had the chance to do - Sophie

I don’t have a bad thing to say about group, the people are really nice and I enjoy my time here.  It is nice to be part of an open minded group that is promoting diversity and the visibility of the LGBTQ community as school have not been particularly open-minded.  There is one poster in the whole school advertising group, I asked if we could put an additional poster up and I was told no.  I would recommend group to other LGBTQ young people in the area - Sophie
