I am Trans

What does ‘trans’ mean?

‘Trans’ is an umbrella term that can used to describe people whose identity doesn't match the gender they were assigned at birth, or with the expectations that society places on binary genders. This can include people who identify as male or female, those who move fluidly through the gender spectrum and those who identify with neither gender. Some people who identify as Trans may choose to go through some form of 'transistion', be this a social transition and/or a medical transition.

There is a myriad of terms that could sit under the Trans umbrella. The different terms can be interpreted in different ways by different people. A person may choose to simply identify as Trans, this is OK and doesn't warrant further discussion unless that person wants to share more details. Please have a look at our Terminology list for a brief description of how some terms may be used.

Some people realise that they're trans later in life, and some know it from an early age. Being drawn towards a particular gender identity is normal and you deserve to be able to express yourself in a way that feels natural to you.

Trans people can come from all different types of backgrounds. Different cultures understand trans issues differently, and legal statuses differ around the world. In the UK anybody who identifies as Trans is protected under the Equality Act 2010 and by law should not be discriminated against or treated unfairly becuase of their Gender Identity. Discriminatory actions or abuse directed at somebody because of their Gender Identity (or percieved Gender Identity) is called Transphobia and is a hate crime.

We all have a Gender Identity; this is unique to each individual and it’s not unusual to have questions about it. If you feel your gender identity doesn’t fit in with what society expects, it doesn’t make you odd. Our diverse and unique identities should be celebrated.
