Becky and Riley's story

Becky has turned her life around at Gabriel Court, one of our housing services for young parents. And her baby, Riley, is thriving…

If I didn’t have Gabriel Court giving me a roof over my head, I wouldn’t have Riley right now. They have helped massively.

Becky was 17 and pregnant when she moved into our supported housing service, Gabriel Court, in Rochdale. She hadn’t had the best start in life herself. Aged nine, she was put in foster care due to her mother’s alcoholism. A succession of 25 foster placements followed because Becky couldn’t settle. When she got pregnant, the last thing Becky wanted was to see her own child taken into care. She was determined to prove to social services that she could cope with Riley’s needs.

Safe and secure housing

Initially Becky needed somewhere safe to live. Her Project Worker, Debra Higson says:

When she first came to us, Becky was living back home again with her mum. Social services were concerned that conditions there were not suitable for a baby.

Our Gabriel Court service offered Becky a small self-contained flat and all the extra support she needed for her baby’s impending arrival.

Moving on to her own place

Becky has now spent 12 months at Gabriel Court and Debra feels she is ready to move into her own home with Riley. Although social services continue to monitor Becky’s situation, she has passed all her parenting assessments.

Becky says our support was the turning point in her life:

Everything’s changed and so I feel better now, I feel happier. Riley is a lovely baby and we’re good together.
