Release Date: 13/11/2017

Barnardo’s Scotland's Employment Training Skills service Baranrdo's Works Tayside & North East celebrated 10 years working in Dundee City and across Angus helping young people into employment.

Barnardo’s Works Tayside & North East celebratory event which took place on Friday 10 November, at The Shore in Dundee, welcomed back staff who created the service along with businesses and organisation in the local area that have supported the service and given employment to many young people over the years.

Young people who are currently supported by the employment service and those who now have flourishing careers also attended the event.

The first induction group for Youthbuild Dundee - as the service was originally called – took place in December 2007.  As the name suggests the majority of placements at this time were in the construction industry.   Over the years the service adapted and widened their remit to work with a variety of local businesses and organisations and helped place young people from all walks of life into a variety of work placements.  The placements range from sheepdog training to mechanical engineering, childcare to retail, customer service to waste water treatment and a host of different industries in-between.

Key highlights for the Youthbuild service were young people wining “Young Builder of the Year” Awards in 2008 and 2009, with the ceremony taking place in London.  Barnardo’s Works winning Scotland’s Best programme in the Care Accolades in 2010, and in 2014 young people attended and worked at the Ryder Cup.  More recently the service has been involved in the launch of Discovering Your Potential in 2017 (a pilot programme to support Care Experienced Young People - in partnership with Action for Children and Prince’s Trust).
