About the Gap Homes Capital Appeal

Young people who have been in care have a 50/50 chance of becoming homeless.

Leaving care is a huge milestone in a young person’s life, with the average age being between 16-18 years old. Without suitable accommodation or a support network, it can be extremely challenging for care leavers to obtain employment, education and training. Lack of life skills and resilience can create issues with budgeting, paying bills, resulting in rent arrears and possibly eviction.

Barnardo's has developed an innovative solution to tackle this issue!

Based on over 20 years of experience supporting care leavers, we are building Gap Homes - purpose built houses for young people leaving care, linked to accessible, consistent "wraparound" support from nearby Barnardo's services. These self-contained homes will be available to care leavers for a period of up to two years, where they will receive support for independent living skills such as cooking and budgeting while buidling their confidence, resilience and support network. Our skilled staff will work with young people to enable access to further education, training or paid employment; all while living in a safe home.

Our Gap Homes pilot is an exciting, innovative and long-term response that will support this incredibly vulnerable group of young people to develop the skills to succeed in reaching independence as adults. Each home we build will continue to support young people long into the future.
