Barnardo's Cymru works in Wales to give children and young people a better start in life. We run 39 diverse projects including services for care leavers and homeless young people and support for young mothers.
In the course of our work we come across many young people, who have had to cope with very difficult life situations. More often than not, their self esteem is low and their emotional and mental health is fragile.
A number of young people we support self harm. They feel the pain of their lives is greater than the pain caused by self harm and say that the only time they feel in control is when they are hurting themselves.
Barnardo's Cymru is concerned that any young person should feel so emotionally distressed and alienated.
In highlighting this issue we want to reach out to people who need help. We also want to create greater understanding among the community about self harm and among parents and friends of self harmers. People who self harm need to know we care.
