Wiltshire Short Breaks Activity Clubs Volunteer (various areas)

Purpose

The aim of Wiltshire Short Breaks Activity Clubs is to provide a disabled Child or Young Person with new experiences and opportunities for socialisation, independence and enjoyment whilst also providing a 'short break' for parents and carers.

Every Child is unique in their needs and the extent of their disability can vary greatly. Many of the Children and Young People are mobile and healthy, but have a learning disability or have Autistic Spectrum Condition, this may mean they have been excluded from many usual activities and may need supervision and help to access these activities.

Some Children and Young People have a physical disability and/or health need, this may mean that they need additional help in a variety of ways to enable them to access activities.

We believe all Children and Young People, whatever their abilities, have the same dreams and need for fun and socialising.

We are looking for Volunteers to engage with and support these disabled Children and Young People aged 8 -18, helping them to take part in activities at Barnardo's Short Break clubs across Wiltshire.

Clubs run for the Children and Young People from 10am to 4pm, with staff and volunteers working 9am to 5pm. We are currently looking for volunteers for Saturdays and / or days during the school holidays.

This is a really rewarding opportunity in which you can expect to gain great experience of working with Children and Young People, do something to support your local community, improve your CV and have fun at the same time.

Ideally we are looking for volunteers who have a special interest in working with disabled young people, children or social care.

This role will require an advanced DBS disclosure as there may be times when Volunteers are unsupervised briefly.

The Volunteer role also requires a minimum commitment of 18 months as familiarity and friendship is important for the ongoing support of the Children and Young People who engage at the Short Breaks Activity Clubs. Some Children and Young People find it difficult to settle into new surroundings with people they don¿t know, thus your ongoing commitment will help alleviate this.

Volunteer Induction training and Service specific training will be delivered to all volunteers.

Independent Visitor

Purpose

To provide a long-term supportive relationship to looked after children and young people from Portsmouth City, aged between 5 and 18 years.

Barnardo's works with children and young people who are in care or who have recently left care. Some of these children and young people may have no, or very little, contact with their families and for some the contact may not always be positive. Where it is thought to be in their best interests, they will be asked whether they would like an Independent Visitor (IV). Local authorities have a duty to provide an IV in these cases. IVs can be the most consistent person in the lives of some children and young people in care and bring tremendous benefits to them. IVs are volunteers who befriend young people, get to know them, advise them and support them during their time in care and sometimes through the process of leaving care.

EPEC Parent Group Leader (across Solihull Borough)

Purpose

Volunteering will take place across Solihull Borough.

Solihull Parenting Strategy ¿
'Parenting is the biggest single factor affecting children's wellbeing and development' -
Public Health England and the Local Government Association, 2016

Parents are the single most significant influence on children's emotional and physical well-being, educational attainment and behaviour. Supporting parents in Solihull can reap significant benefits in reduction in costs in reactive services later in the life course and are at the heart of the offer to give children the best start in life in the borough.
The parenting offer in Solihull is universal, underpinned by principles of primary prevention and enabling peer support between parents and carers in our communities.
We are seeking volunteers to be part of a new project which Solihull is a pilot site for, evaluating the ¿Empowering Parents Empowering Communities¿ Programme.

Mentor (child)

Purpose

To provide support as a step down process as part of an exit plan form the CSE/Missing service provision, once all work has been completed and the young person is deemed able to make safer choices. They may also have reached the age of 18, when our service provision ceases.
Some young people may have faced a number of significant challenges in their lives already. Their experiecnes and lifestlyes may have made them particularly vulnerable, for example to Child Sexual Exploitation. Although they may have been succussfully supported to address their needs and help achieve a more positive and safe existence, they may benefit from continued support from a trusted adult, independent from their family or other professionals. Sometimes, just having someone to talk to and knowing they are there can increase the child or young person's sense of security and help them feel safe to continue making good decisions for themselves.

Independent Visitor (Volunteer)

Purpose

The Independent Visitor Service is part of London Children's Rights Service, a Barnardo's service which is located near Crystal Palce train station.

The Independent Visitor project provides Independent Visitors to support children and young people who are in residential care, foster homes and semi-independent accommodation.

Support for these children and young people can include visiting, advising and befriending them, giving them practical help where possible, and acting as an 'adult friend' in situations where the child or young person may have little contact with members of their own family. Independent visitors provide a support which is 'independent' of all other areas of a child or young person's care - they may often be one of very few (if any) people who are not 'paid in some way' to be in their lives. An Independent Visitor provides a consistent and stable person in a young person's life when so many things and people in a 'looked after' young persons' are fluid and changing. For this reason we ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of 2 years with their matched young person.

The Independent Visitor can also have an input to reviews about the child or young person¿s progress (if the child/young person wishes).
