Vocational training and alternative curriculum options

Barnardo’s has a number of vocational training centres for 16-19 year-olds, many of which also offer an alternative curriculum for 14-16 year olds who show an interest in learning a vocation skill or are at risk of exclusion from school.
In Barnardo’s training centres, young people learn and work with experienced trades people, picking up relevant skills and attitudes which they will need in the workplace. Project workers provide on-going support and advice to help them overcome any difficulties they may face and make the most of their course or placement.
Windermere Construction Skills Training alternative education
Based in South London, Windermere offers courses in painting and decorating, carpentry and bricklaying, as well as focussing on literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
14-16 year olds for instance can gain a City & Guilds Foundation Award in construction - equivalent to 3 GCSEs. The Award acts as a springboard into further training at college or through a local employer. All students gain a CITB Construction Skills Certification Scheme card - a legal requirement for working on site.
Dr B’s
Barnardo’s has two restaurants - in Harrogate and Belfast - which specialise in supporting young people aged 16-24, many of whom have learning disabilities. Through carefully structured activities, in a real work environment, trainees grow in confidence, gaining valuable life skills and qualifications. NVQs in catering are offered and external work placements provide additional experience, often leading to employment.
Palmersville Training
This project in North Tyneside provides Entry to Employment (E2E) and Apprenticeships in Business Administration, Beauty Therapy, Hairdressing, Horticulture, Retail and Customer Service, Warehousing, Hospitality and Painting and Decorating. Students work in small groups with experienced teaching and support staff.
Taster vocational programmes are also available for 14-16 year olds. Participating schools report increased motivation and improved attendance, among the young people they refer.
