Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
The National FGM Centre offers a one-day or half day CPD advanced level training to build on professionals’ existing safeguarding knowledge and skills. This will enable them to act appropriately and with confidence to protect girls from FGM and support those who have already been subjected to the practice.
As of the 31st October 2015, it is a statutory requirement for social workers, teachers as well regulated health professionals by the Health and Care Professions Council (such as GPs, midwives, school nurses and counsellors) to report to the police any known cases of female genital mutilation for girls under the age of 18 to the police. All other professionals are required to follow their normal safeguarding routes.
This one/ half day course is designed with the needs of all professionals working with girls and their families in mind and aims to enhance professionals’ performance standards with regards to FGM. It explores the roles and responsibilities of different professionals and the processes for handling suspected or known cases of FGM.
To ensure that all professionals working with girls and families have an understanding of FGM, and have the skills to act appropriately and confidently to protect and support girls who are at risk or have been subjected to FGM.
76% of education workers who attended the course strongly agree, and 24% agree, that the training has increased their knowledge about FGM and their safeguarding responsibilities. All attendees said they would recommend the training.
