Barnardo’s undertake specialist consultancy work on a range of topics related to children, young people and families work. Barnardo’s has a small ring fenced team who undertake this work, but also has the potential to draw on specialist expertise and capacity from across its  children’s services.

Each consultancy project is specifically designed; our work includes reviews of services, independent reviews of practice, safeguarding audits  and development of safeguarding policies. We also undertake independent evaluations and investigations.

Our dedicated team of Consultants are a ring fenced resource, brought together to ensure we can offer the right people with the right skills to address a variety of needs.

Our Consultants listen carefully to your requirements and we will ensure we provide you with the right people with the right skills to undertake the work required. Our work has involved projects working for public and voluntary sector organisations at a local and national level.

The Open University

Barnardo’s Consultancy were commissioned by the Open University to review its safeguarding arrangements and ensure a proportionate response to safeguarding young people and vulnerable adults. This involved reviewing and developing policies, consulting staff to understand the key risks arising, supporting the development of a Safeguarding Board to oversee developments, assisting in writing relevant policies and capacity building safeguarding leads across the various faculties.  On-going consultancy support is provided to the Open University’s Safeguarding Group.

Policy development- British Legion / Refugee Action

Barnardo’s Consultancy have been commissioned by a number of other national Voluntary Organisations, for example British Legion, and Refugee Action, to review and update their safeguarding policies, and develop up to date procedures regarding safeguarding children and adults at risk.  

British Transport Police

Barnardo’s Consultancy were commissioned to address the workforce development needs of British Transport Police in relation to safeguarding. The work culminated in the development and cascade of a bespoke e-learning safeguarding programme and workshops for senior managers to enable them to consider their safeguarding responsibilities.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service

Barnardo’s Consultancy were commissioned to address the workforce development needs of Avon Fire and Rescue in relation to safeguarding. The work culminated in the development and cascade of a bespoke e-learning safeguarding programme designed specifically for the fire service, and a workshop for senior managers to enable them to consider their safeguarding responsibilities.

Independent review of Reading Leaving Care service

Barnardo’s Consultancy was commissioned by the Local Authority to undertake an independent audit of its provision for Care Leavers in line with Ofsted requirements.

This involved a review of policies and procedures, sampling of cases and pathway plans, and consultation with practitioners and managers. Young people were also consulted about their experience of the support they received. A detailed report was provided with a clear set of recommendations to affect improvements.  

Devon County Council- independent review of residential children’s homes.

The local authority commissioned Barnardo’s Consultancy to undertake a robust independent review of three residential children’s homes, its secure unit and supported lodgings provision. This work involved observations of practice on site, a desk top review of policies and procedures, sampling/auditing of cases and consultation with practitioners and managers. It also involved consultation with a number of young people.  An overview report was produced regarding key findings; a clear set of recommendations was produced.

Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children Board

Barnardo’s Consultancy were commissioned by a Local Safeguarding Children Board to undertake a Training Needs analysis across the multi-agency children's workforce. This analysis involved collating management information about individual delivery by respective agencies, and consulting managers and staff about their identified needs. A detailed report was provided with a clear set of recommendations, which informed the development of a new workforce development strategy for the LSCB, in order to ensure resources were targeted most efficiently and effectively.  

Management Investigations

Barnardo’s Consultancy has been commissioned by a number of bodies/agencies to undertake independent management investigations following complaints against professionals.  Such investigations are managed sensitively and professionally at all times, with a sound awareness of best practice principles and a focus on organisational policy and procedures. Detailed reports are provided with clear conclusions and a set of recommendations to address next steps.

Each piece of work commissioned is individually priced and full costs agreed at the outset.
