Support the Unsupported
Barnardo’s ‘Support the Unsupported’ campaign brings to life Barnardo’s purpose to transform the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children. We are asking for the public to help us support the children who need it most, and who have no-one.
Our TV advert tells the story of 14 year old Ellie who has been sexually exploited. Sadly Ellie's story is based on the lives of the thousands of children we support every day.
When she was 13 years old, Ellie met Craig, who said he loved her and called her his girlfriend. Over time, Craig became aggressive and controlling, and Ellie grew afraid of him.
Craig took Ellie to parties forcing her to have sex with multiple men. Craig threatened Ellie so she was too scared to tell anyone about it.
Ellie felt the abuse she suffered was her fault and that she didn’t deserve any better.
I’m no good… I’m not worth it.
Caroline, the project worker from Barnardo’s,
gained Ellie’s trust showing Ellie what had
happened wasn’t her fault.
Ellie’s school became increasingly concerned when she began to skip school. They introduced her to a Barnardo’s project worker called Caroline.
Caroline gained Ellie’s trust - she would meet Ellie after school and they would just chat.
Eventually, Ellie felt ready to talk about what Craig had done.
Caroline helped her see that it was wrong and that Craig had exploited her.
I believe you Ellie. And together we’re going to find a way to make this stop.
Now, with the support of Barnardo’s, Ellie is beginning to come to terms with the abuse she has suffered, and is back in school and making new friends.
