Boy in classroom at Barnardo's Spring Hill School

Spring Hill School caters for children and young people with a wide range of learning and behavioural needs.

Five of our students have recorded 'day in the life' diaries to give you a better idea of life at Springhill School from the student perspective.

A day in the life of Sonia

I wake up by myself. Half seven. I am happy. I get up and get dressed. I can hear staff. It’s happy. I have cornflakes, toast and milk, but not together. I watch TV before class.

Class time! Run, run, run down to class, jogging, dancing and exercising to class. Can’t wait. My class is 4Z in Pines. Rainbow colours, pictures, computers and work.

In English, I practice my writing. I like books, they make me laugh, nice pictures, good stories. I like reading.

Break time. Cup of tea time. Relax time.

Maths numbers. Count, add, order and taking away. Mixed up numbers. Ask staff to help.

Get up, off to the gym. PE time. Trampolining is great. Basketball and cricket. Red cheeks, sweat and big breathing.

Assembly. Sit down, listen to stories. Sing loud and dance. Tummy is loud too. Rumble.

Dinner Time! I sit with my friends.

Lessons after dinner are fun. Art, painting, sticky tickling hands. Music, banging, hitting drums. After school its back to cottage, play station, TV, music and dancing. Fun!

A day in the life of Peter

I am happy today. My class is going on a trip to Ullswater outdoor pursuits centre. I have to get my clothes ready. I like to sit with my friends on the bus. It’s quite a long way. When I get there there’s a lady and a man to help us. I am going to do climbing, driving a boat and canoeing. I am going to have sausages and bacon for breakfast.

My behaviour has improved so much my mum hardly recognises me when I go home. I have been here five years and enjoyed every minute of it. Quote from a pupil

A day in the life of Nick

My class is 16+ and so I am getting a lot of opportunities to do work experience.

I do two days at the walled garden where I build staging chop logs and I cut grass on the ride-on lawnmower. I even took my lawnmower test with York college.

I work with a handy man for one day each week. I have done tiling, fitting kitchens and carpets and decorated.

I work with Tom on a Wednesday afternoon doing woodwork. I have learnt how to make joints, put screws and nails in, measure and how to use tools safely. I have built a box. It is the best part of the week, I really enjoy it.

A day in the life of Sarah

I wake up at 8 o'clock, then I get in the bath. I pull the plug out, get dried and get dressed. I go down to the kitchen for my breakfast. I like fried eggs on toast to eat. I like Rice Crispies too.

I go to school at 9 o’clock. My classroom is next door to my cottage. My favourite lesson is maths with my teacher Jenny. After maths we have a break and a drink at 10 am. I am learning about fractions, but I don’t like fractions much.

I like to draw at break time and go on the computer. I like to type gobbledy-gook. I like ICT because I like doing dazzle on the computer. The next lesson is literacy. I don’t like literacy at the moment because I find it quite hard. Peter my teacher is funny.  I like the careers lesson with Gill. We have been to see the cats at The Blue Cross and to see some dogs at the Jerry Green foundation.

I don’t like assembly, I find it too noisy. I sometimes like it when we have a sharing assembly. Young people show their work.

For lunch my favourite food is ham sandwiches with tomato.

For my reward I like to play tennis. After school I go for a walk to the cottage. I like going swimming, and going to nature places too.

I like fish and chips for tea, and chocolate cake for pudding.

My activities are swimming, ice hockey tables and Fifa on the computer. I like watching a bit of TV before I go to bed and talking to staff.

A day in the life of Jenny

I get up at 5am and I wash my face and brush my teeth. Then I put the straighteners on and I get ready. I straighten my hair and put my make-up and perfume on. I have my breakfast and wait for school to start.

We start school at 9am and school is ok at times. First lesson is maths. I am starting a new book in maths and we all go on education city at the end of lesson.

We stop for break and we can go on the computers and we all have a drink and stop for the lesson.

We talked about designer clothes and money in PHSCE. The next lesson is literary and I enjoyed talking about adverts for television and film. I love ICT, it is one of my favourite lessons. I also love Art and we are printing with stamps at the moment.

We go for assembly.  We sit and listen, and Tuesday we have sharing assembly where we show our work .

I usually choose a sandwich for lunch but you can have hot meals if you wish.  The meals are alright.

I usually choose pool as my reward.  I get a reward if I am good and on task. After school I usually chill out and listen to music.  My favourite trip is a girlie shopping trip at Primark.

We have tea in the cottage.  We get a choice and if I don’t like it I can make a sandwich.

Then for activities, there is youth club, shopping, swimming and trips to the cinema. We usually go to our rooms at 9.30 and I am usually asleep by midnight!
