Child protection policy

The safety of our children is our greatest responsibility and we will give every assistance to local authority social services departments in order to enable them to carry out their statutory child protection responsibilities.

We run a training programme that will enable all our staff to identify child protection issues and also support the child throughout this process.

We follow Barnardo’s Safeguarding & Protecting Children / Young People Policy as well as those of all the school’s user authorities. We have a separate policy, which takes steps to ensure that pupils who are absent from school/residential units or on activities away from the school without consent are protected.

Sex and relationship education policy

Sex and relationship education is delivered within the science curriculum and aims to teach pupils about family life, stable and loving relationships and sex, sexuality and sexual health.

We believe that sex and relationship education is important in building our pupils’ self-confidence, cultural understanding and scientific knowledge. Our staff will always answer questions in an open and factual way but we ensure that:

  • our staff will never enter into discussions about personal issues and lifestyles
  • a child is never stigmatised because of his or her home circumstances
  • staff are allowed to use their own discretion when faced with questions of a sensitive nature, for example homosexuality, contraception or sexually transmitted diseases.

We will always be sensitive to family background and we see parents as vital partners in helping children to develop a mature and thorough understanding of sex and relationships.
