Student independence

Student washing up at Barnardo's Spring Hill School

Developing young people’s independence is a key aspect of our work.

We help to prepare young people to achieve as much independence as possible after they have left Spring Hill, regardless of their level of ability. We support young people to develop skills and experience in the following areas:

  • daily living
  • socialising
  • independent travel
  • personal hygiene
  • cooking
  • accessing the community
  • budgeting.

In addition, we provide young people with a range of work experience placements and we have also developed links with a number of colleges including Harrogate College and Askham Bryan College. These experiences not only help young people to develop skills but also to make informed decisions about their future.

We support young people in their transition from Spring Hill School by working closely with the Connexions service and other professionals involved.

The school successfully helps pupils grow and take responsibility for their behaviour and learning. Ofsted report 2009
