The Barnardo's SPHERE Service opened in October 2004. SPHERE stands for School Participation, Health Education and Research.
We believe that every young person should have access to age-appropriate and up-to-date health information and advice, and be able to take part in school-based and community-based health education programmes that are both innovative and participative.
We work with Ryde Federation of Schools, Isle of Wight Primary Care Trust, SureStart Ryde and other community organisations in order to provide a comprehensive variety of programmes for young people aged 6 to 19 years that encourage them to lead healthier lifestyles. We cover a wide range of issues including drugs, sex and relationships, alcohol, emotional well-being, self-esteem, smoking, diet and exercise.
Young people have real concerns about their health, and want to contribute to the planning and delivery of programmes that involve them. We encourage their active participation in all work, and respect and listen to them on all levels.
We are also involved in health research, and are conducting a four-year PhD study into the relationships between physical exercise and educational attainment.
