Young people’s websites

  • Need 2 Know A web site that aims to provide young people with some of the most useful web site links available on health, enterainment, travel, relationships and many others.
  • The Site A magazine-style website for young people presenting a wide range of information about fun and serious issues in an interactive format. Topics include drugs, health, the law, careers and money.
  • Youth Information A general information site for young people including a drugs page. The alphabetical list of drugs is easy to use with detailed information about specific types of drugs, both legal and illegal. Also contains a summary of government strategy.
  • Time to Talk A free and confidential advice service for young people aged 13-25 offering information, counselling, drug and alcohol services and sexual health services.
  • Drug Drive A site for young people looking at the affects of drug use when driving. An interactive and informative site.
  • National Youth Agency The organisation works with young people on drugs education through the youth and community services. It also produces ‘Young People Now’ magazine which features news about national and local drugs education initiatives.
  • Re-Solv The young persons' site from Re-solv, the UK’s main site for solvent abuse. Contains facts, quizzes and stories.
  • D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education. A charity that was established to reduce drug, solvent and alcohol abuse and violence by educating young people about the consequences and teaching resistance skills. This is the English site for D.A.R.E (which is an American charity).

Activity and resource providers

  • Portman Group An organisation formed by drinks manufacturers to promote sensible drinking and reduce alcohol misuse. Site contains many free resources.
  • EducaRI A drug education site containing resources from around the world. Professionals can participate in discussion forums and a “drugs policy wizard” for schools is available, together with other official policy documents.
  • HIT HIT provides training, consultation and information on drug-related issues with the aim of reducing harm caused by drug use.
  • BBC Health A comprehensive health site that includes information on drugs.
  • Re-solv A national charity for the prevention of solvent and volatile substance abuse (VSA). Site provides information in a range of formats, fact sheets, an on line training course and details of Re-Solv publications and services.

Government departments and initiatives

  • Tackling Drugs to Build a Better Britain The cross-government website to support National Drugs Strategy and the work of the Drug Action Teams (DATs). The site contains information about the government’s 10-year strategy.
  • Department for Education and Skills (DfES) Provides guidance and support to LEAs (Local Education Authorities) providing drug education. The website includes a news section and copies of DfES publications.
  • Department of Health The site contains sections on substance misuse, alcohol misuse and volatile substance misuse which are intended primarily as a resource for professionals delivering drug prevention and treatment services. Some of the information is also of interest to parents, young people and students.
  • Mentor UK The Mentor Foundation is an international not for profit organisation that focuses on the prevention of drug misuse among young people and the promotion of their health and well-being.
  • Health Inequalities Unit (HIU) A special team within the Department of Health that aims to reduce health inequalities experienced by those on low incomes or reliant on state benefits.
  • Wired for Health Aimed at teachers but useful for anyone delivering health education. Site contains a range of information and resources including some on substance misuse, alcohol and mental health.
  • Adfam A leading charity working with families affected by drug and alcohol misuse. They provide a large range of publications and resources for families about substances and criminal justice. Site contains a message board for  families to talk to others who have experienced (or are currently experiencing) similar problems and a database of local support groups .
  • Alcohol Concern A nationa; alcohol misuse charity. They work to reduce the alcohol related harm and to increase the range and quality of services available to people with alcohol related problems.
  • Drugscope.Drugscope is one of the UK’s leading centres of expertise on drugs. Their aim is to inform policy development and reduce drug related risk. They provide quality drug information; promote effective responses to drug taking; undertake research at a local, national and international levels; advise on policy making; encourage informed debate and speak for their member bodies working on the ground.   • National Drugs Helpline Accurate information and advice on drugs.
  • European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) Established by the European Community in response to a heightening drug problem in Europe, it works on specific topics ranging from education and training to the environment and drugs.
  • Release The National legal and drugs advice service. It provides the Drugs in Schools helpline as well as education and information materials.
  • Schools Education information site featuring details of books about drug issues within schools.
