Pupils - their involvement

The Pupil Council currently has six members. There is a representative from each of the residential units and a day pupil from the key stage 3 and key stage 4 departments. They meet once per half term and have a budget of £200 per term to spend on school improvement items.

The council has achieved a lot of positive change within the school. Council representatives discuss the meetings with the group they represent and relay ideas to the council.

Two members of staff help to facilitate the meetings but decisions are the Pupil Council’s own.

Staff at Meadows

'High quality pastoral care from all staff raises pupils’ self esteem and gives them belief in their own abilities and confidence to improve further', Ofsted report, 2004

Meadows staff want all our pupils to achieve their full potential during their time with us. We work to ensure that our expectations, attitudes, and practices do not prevent any child from fulfilling his or her potential, but rather support and help them fulfil their goals and personal plan set out together with parents and staff.

See the current staff structure here.

Parents

Parents of all pupils are encouraged to play an active part in the life of the school. We regularly have activities to which parents are invited and the class teacher will phone parents to discuss pupil progress and education related issues.

'Parents were all very pleased with the improvements their children made while at the school', Ofsted report, 2004

For the parents of pupils in the residential units:

  • Telephone contact between parents and pupils is encouraged
  • Pupils are allowed home leave regularly and this is agreed by parents and school staff. Leave is never used as a sanction for bad behaviour.
  • Residential social work staff will speak with parents at least weekly to discuss a child’s progress.
