Ryde Extended Services
The aim of Ryde Extended Services is to meet the needs of children, young people and families. This is done through partnership working and supporting local Ryde schools and the community in achieving this aim.
Why work with schools?
Schools are typically at the heart of the communities they serve and are ideally placed to offer access to a range of extended services that can have a positive impact on standards and the life chances of children, young people and families.
What is an extended service?
Extended services are services that are delivered for and with children, young people and their families . They are outside of the core curriculum and often before or after school times, weekends and holidays. Extended services are always planned to compliment a child’s learning.
Extended services can take place on or off the school site and can be organised by the school themselves or in partnership with other organisations (i.e the local youth club, the police or a charity such as Barnardo’s).
When delivered effectively, extended services can help children overcome barriers to learning and enrich the curriculum.Schools should plan new activities and services in ways that deliver the Every Child Matters (ECM) outcomes, as well as support school improvement.
By 2010 every school has to offer the following:
- wraparound childcare (from 8am to 6pm)
- a varied menu of activities
- parenting support
- community access
- swift and easy access to services that support the family and the child.
