Barnardo's and National Vocational Qualifications
Looking for an opportuntity to study for a National Vocational Qualification? Then why not join Barnardo's as a volunteer in one of retail branches?
Barnardo's currently offer NVQs in retail and customer service to volunteers at selected branches throughout the country. To find out if this opportuntity is available in your local area contact the NVQ centre.
Q. What is an NVQ?
A. NVQs (and the Scottish equivalent, SNVQs) are practical qualifications based in the skills and knowledge needed to do a particular job. They aren't about going back to school nor do they involve sitting exams or taking written tests. They are flexible, with no time limits, no age limits and no special entrance requirements. The NVQ framework is designed to help you make progress and keep your career on the move.
Q. How do you get an NVQ?
A. By agreeing an individual work plan with your manager and assessor. You decide how long it will take, working at your own speed, you can do it all at once or in stages. NVQs are awarded when you can demonstrate that you can carry out your work to the 'NVQ Standard' and that you have the necessary knowledge to be able to carry out your work effectively.
Q. Who are NVQs for?
A. Everyone. Because there are five levels - ranging from Level 1, covering basic work activities, through to level 5 for senior management - they can benefit experienced senior mangers as much as newcomers to the job market.
Q. What about special assessment requirements?
A. Every NVQ carries a commitment to equal opportunities. There are no barriers to achieving an NVQ; all that matters is your ability to meet the NVQ standards.
Q. What will it cost?
A. This opportunity won't cost you anything at all in monetary terms but you will need to commit to spending regular time working on your award. This will involve doing some of the work in your own time at home. You will also need to meet with your assessor during work time so your will need the agreement of your line manager.
Q. What do I do next?
A. Contact the Centre. They will put you in touch with a member of the team who can provide more information and answer any queries that you may have.
