Teaching resources for Year 7

Five interactive lesson plans designed to teach Year 7 pupils how to analyse communication materials effectively. At the same time pupils will learn about the contemporary issues that vulnerable children in the UK face.

Each lesson plan is complete with exciting support material and homework to aid your pupils’ learning.

The plans were developed by Michael Noakes, English Teacher at Barking Abbey School in London.

Lesson 1- Discover Barnardo’s and the charity sector

Here children will gain an understanding of the charity sector as a whole, Barnardo’s development over the ages and the plight of vulnerable children in the UK.

Lesson 2- Understanding Barnardo’s Communication with the Public- Part One

Pupils will engage with posters from previous Barnardo’s advertising campaigns. They will assess the communication materials’ effectiveness by examining language devices, imagery and general form.

Lesson 3- Understanding Barnardo’s Communication with the Public - Part Two

Building on the previous lessons work pupils will be asked to compare the effectiveness of different posters. Whilst doing this they will gain a more detailed understanding of Barnardo’s work with vulnerable children.

Lesson 4- Create your Own Poster for Barnardo’s

Pupils will use their media analysis skills to make their own poster for Barnardo’s. Children will work either individually or in pairs and will have the chance to be entered into a Barnardo’s poster competition!
