Steven’s story*

Steven was taking drugs by the age of nine, having witnessed domestic violence and his parents splitting up.

His mum struggled to cope but was referred to Barnardo’s Neath Port Talbot Parenting Matters project for help.

They have not looked back since.

How Barnardo's helps

Barnardo’s runs projects like Parenting Matters that help children, young people and their parents affected by alcohol and substance abuse. They provide information, advice, education and practical support, so young people can turn their backs on the cycle that drugs can lead to. Support includes:

  • support to reduce and eliminate drug dependency
  • parenting skills courses and advice
  • teaching basic life skills, and access to resources such as computers and training to improve prospects
  • providing subsidised meals and other support if they have become homeless

This work can only continue with your support.

Did you know?

The consequences of alcohol and substance misuse include non-attendance and poor attainment at school, poor health, committing crime to support 'habits' and also increased risk of being a victim of violent crime and sexual exploitation.
