A. There are many ways in which you can help Barnardo’s, why not have a look at our support us section and see how you can help at school or by organising your own event, at college or by donating online. You can also help by taking your unwanted goods to your local shop, or donating your old printer toner cartridge.

Q. Where does the money originate from and how do you raise your voluntary income?

A. Barnardo’s receives approximately £65 million every year from local authorities for working in partnership with them to provide services in their area, this might include short term break care for disabled children or fostering and adoption services.

We raise approximately £67 million each year through our fundraising and retail activity, this ranges from asking for donations from our regular donors to raising money from companies and grant giving trusts. We also run lots of events which raise money and work with schools to raise money through fundraising activity. If you would like to help Barnardo’s raise money find out some of the many ways you can do it.

We also generate approximately a further £10 million through investments and sale and development of properties.

Q. How much money is needed to help one child?

A. The cost of helping one child or young person depends very much on how we are helping them. We work with some children for a short time, for example if a young person receives help moving from living in care to living independently. We work with some children or young people a long period, for example if we are providing short break care for a disabled young person and their family. Therefore the cost varies dramatically, however the average cost is £2,300 for every person each year.

Q. How much money do you raise on average in a charity shop?

A. We have 330 shops across the UK at present and we raise on average £215 a day in each of our shops. Why not find your nearest shop.
