Barnardo’s and current affairs

Q. How political is Barnardo’s and which political party would Barnardo’s support?

A. The Charities Commission and legislation relating to charities prohibit us from being political so we wouldn’t support one political party over another, rather we would work with all MPs and parties in order to make them aware of key issues impacting on children and young people.

Q. Does Barnardo’s lobby MPs and how?

A. We do work with MPs to advise them and help them understand the issues which are key to children and young people today. We go to all the political party conferences to speak to MPs and write to them on a regular basis about current issues.

Sometimes an MP will sponsor an Early Day Motion about an issue which other MPs will sign . Recently Linda Perham MP sponsored an Early Day Motion about the National Policing Plan as Barnardo’s felt it didn’t do enough to help children abused through prostitution. This was signed by 227 MPS in total and that meant we could take that support to set up meetings with the Home Office and work to change the plan.

We have recently also started e-campaigning where we ask our supporters to email their MP about an issue to make sure they are aware of it.
