Barnardo's response to 'Care Matters transforming the lives of children and young people in care'
This response is based on practice and research evidence and has been informed by consultation with our service users. Information was gathered from questionnaires returned by 42 foster carers and from 7 focus groups involving over 130 care experienced children and young people.

Barnardo's response 'Education and skills committee inquiry into bullying'
Barnardo's welcomes this consultation. Our response is based on research conducted by the Policy and Research Unit (PRU) which focused specifically on disability, homophobic and racist bullying and links with children and young people's emotional wellbeing mental health.

Barnardo's response 'Convicting rapists and protecting victims - Justice for victims of rape'
Barnardo’s are contributing to this consultation from the knowledge and understanding we have gained from helping children and young people who are most vulnerable to sexual exploitation and, separately, young people who display harmful sexual behaviour.
We welcome the Government’s continuing initiatives to address sexualised violence and, in this particular consultation, to improve the outcome of rape cases through further strengthening the existing legal framework and improving care for victims and witnesses.

Barnardo's response to 'A new deal for welfare: Empowering people to work'
Barnardo's services are located in some of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods where child poverty and social exclusion are common features. To ensure that this response is fully informed by our work we have consulted with our service managers in over 100 services which deal with issues regarding poverty, disability and welfare benefits, and their views have been incorporated in the response.

Barnardo’s Response to Definition of Disability – Consultation by the Disability Rights Commission
We welcome this consultation into the possibility of extending the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act. Barnardo’s works with children from a variety of different backgrounds, including those with disabilities, serious illnesses and those with mental health problems. We are keen to ensure that sufficient legal protection is in place for these children and young people and their families to ensure that they are not unreasonably denied access to employment or services as a result of their condition.

We welcome this consultation and our response is based on our experience of working with families on issues related to food poverty and also on the findings in our report ‘Burger boy and sporty girl’ children and young people’s attitudes towards food in schools (2004).

Barnardo's response to 'Youth Matters'
We work with children affected by today’s most urgent issues: poverty, homelessness, disability and abuse. Our projects work with children aged 0 to 18 (or 24 in the case of young care leavers) and a significant number provide services for young people aged 12 to 19, these include leaving care, young single homeless, young carers, sexual exploitation, training, youth inclusion and support programmes and young people support projects. To ensure that this response is fully informed by the views of young people we consulted with over 120 young people aged 12 to 22 and staff from all of the above services and their views have been incorporated in the main body of the response. The specific opinions of young people are included as an appendix.
