Barnardo's has a range of community development services to promote communities that safeguard the well-being of children and families. Our publications include work looking at community development and key issues such as poverty, social exclusion, young offenders and political conflict.


Red star Swansea St. Helen's School & Vincent Street homezone feasibility study July 2006

A feasibility study into outdoor play and community space in the Sandfields area of Swansea to discover:

  • what children, the school, local young people and local residents think about current play opportunities and
  • what opportunities and concerns there would be regarding the establishment of community outdoor facilities in the area.

Red star When the circus leaves town: The legacy of Art of Regeneration, A follow up report for the Arts Council, 2006

This report, the last in a series of 3 evaluations of the Art of Regeneration (AoR) conducted by Barnardo's since 2001, explores the issues of an arts-based initiative and its role in regeneration and sustainability in more depth. It addresses the question of what is the lasting impact of the AoR on Deptford and what implications does this have for future art based regeneration initiatives.

Red star What works in community development with children?

Actively involving children with community projects, and enabling them to speak for themselves, raises practical and ethical issues. This review considers the different forms of community development involving children and young people including safety, health, promoting education and preparing for citizenship. Provides advice about conducting research and evaluation and draws conclusions about what helps and hinders community development.

A child's place: Why environment matters to children

Research interviews conducted with Barnardo's asking 10 and 11 year olds about the environment and how it affects them are the basis for this report; the aim was to establish children's perspective and lessons for policy makers. Lessons include the fact that children are losing their links to the natural environment and this is having an impact on wellbeing.

Children in trouble: time for change

The England and Wales justice system has one of the lowest ages of criminal responsibility in Europe and holds children as young as 10 years old fully accountable as adults. This coalition report calls for change and for the principles of children’s human rights to underpin how children are dealt with in the justice system.

Evaluation of "Art of Regeneration"

“Art of Regeneration” – a London based social regeneration programme - used creativity to develop children and young people’s key skills. The achievements have been impressive. This report evaluates the four year SRB6 project and looks at the difficulties and challenges as well as successes to learn lessons for the future.

Evaluation of CANDL: Church and neighbourhood development in London

CANDL is one of Barnardo’s smaller projects, providing hands-on consultancy and training to local church groups to support them in helping to improve the quality of life for children, young people and families in the more disadvantaged parts of East and South London. The evaluation was carried out between March and June 2006.

Middlesbrough alcohol strategy

Connexions Tee Valley commissioned this report collating data to inform the development of a multi-agency strategy addressing alcohol use by 10 to 19 years olds in Middlesbrough. Over 900 contacts with young people and the support of diverse partners, including a local radio station, have brought together a comprehensive range of data that would not otherwise have been linked.

We'll never be the same - Learning with children, parents and communities though ongoing political conflict and trauma

Making a difference in the lives of children and families who have experienced threatening events through political conflict in Northern Ireland/ the north of Ireland. An improved understanding of the impact of the conflict, contributing to parent support, trauma support and the processes of peace-building, are the key purposes of this resource pack. Made up of a main report and five accompanying booklets, it has been developed from a two year research action, group work and community development carried out by Barnardo’s “Parenting in a Divided Society” project.
