Barnardo's provides a range of services to support children at risk and to prevent future harm from neglect, abuse and sexual exploitation. This work is reflected in our publishing. Bwise2 Sexual Exploitation
This pack equips teachers, social workers and counsellors to educate young people about sexual exploitation with honesty and realism. The material is all based on the experiences of young people supported by a specialist Barnardo’s service. Full resources for the activity-based sessions are provided and thorough facilitators’ notes with practical tips let you feel fully confident in delivering this relevant and engaging programme. Includes a CD-ROM of the session resources for printing or projecting.
Tipping the Iceberg
A pan Sussex study of young people at risk of sexual exploitation and trafficking, the objective of this 12 month research was to establish the level and nature of current need for services amongst young people at risk of sexual exploitation in Sussex. The report is for those charged with responsibilities for safeguarding children, from service planners and commissioners, to the practitioners providing support and services to vulnerable young people.

Offside!
This film and workbook explore appropriate teenage relationships and challenge sexual beliefs that can be associated with harmful sexual behaviour. A 15 minute drama depicts positive and negative examples of young people’s behaviour in pursuit of relationships. The effects of sexual abuse and the consequences for all involved are also highlighted. The workbook provides individual and group exercises that help young people examine issues relating to healthy relationships, consent, discrimination and sexuality.

This film drama and work book explore the story of Matt and Aiden, who sexually assault Ellie. The pack focuses on consequences, motivation to address offending, sexual attitudes, victim empathy and relapse-prevention. Includes session outlines and exercises suitable for professionals to use with boys of 12+, individually and in groups, where there are concerns about their sexually harmful behaviours.
Blueprint of experience: Working to prevent and reduce child sexual exploitation in the UK, Netherlands and Estonia
This report outlines lessons learned from European work with children and young people at risk of sexual exploitation. Funded by the European Commission's AGIS, this programme involved NGO practitioners from the UK, Netherlands and Estonia.

What works for children and young people with harmful sexual behaviours?
This title reviews interventions and strategies for working with children and young people who display sexually harmful behaviour. It examines research and effective interventions with adolescents who have sexually abused and pre-adolescent children with sexual behaviour problems. The need for supportive and empathic interventions which are developmentally sensitive is highlighted.

Meeting the needs of sexually exploited young people in London
Presenting the findings of a two year study into young people at risk of sexual exploitation, this research suggests only around half of those young people at risk are currently being identified or supported. The roles and possibilities for proactive intervention from the police, education and health services are explored. Includes best practice recommendations. Essential reading for policy makers and service providers in all sectors. Funded by the Bridge House Trust and carried out by Barnardo’s between September 2003 and April 2005.

Nae Danger
Made by young people who have been affected by sexual exploitation, Nae Danger looks at issues around risk and keeping safe. Designed for use with 11 to 16 year olds to explore issues around keeping safe, sexual exploitation, internet safety and a variety of other related issues. Includes an animated film (DVD), a selection of games and activity sheets, all stored in a handy record bag. The pack comes with comprehensive guidance on how to use it.

Protecting self and keeping safe

Taking stock: Children and young people at risk of, or involved in, abuse through prostitution in Stockton-on-Tees
In this research both adults and children make recommendations about service and practice developments in the area of sexual exploitation. The report was designed to determine the extent, and raise awareness among professionals, of abuse through prostitution in Stockton-on-Tees. A collaborative piece of work between the Barnardo’s SECOS service and other agencies.

A process review of the Child Protection Reform Programme (March 2007)
A process review of the Child Protection Reform Programme (CPRP), a three year initiative with the goal of improving protection of children at risk of neglect and reducing the number of children who need protection. It was carried out by dundee University's Centre for Child Care and Protection and Barnardo's Scotland Research and Development Team.

'Help at hand' - an evaluation report of a programme of activities promoting alternatives to smacking children - 2006
This evaluation report was commissioned by Children are Unbeatable Cymru. Through a community survey and qualitative research with 39 parents, a class of primary school children and a class of secondary school children it examines attitudes towards smacking and outlines the most effective means of encouraging parents to adopt non violent methods of managing children's behaviour.

Reduce speed now: Stop, look and listen
This joint report with Transport 2000 looks at road safety issues and their effects on children. More than 150 school aged children took part in the research, which reveals how children feel that selfish driving and high speed prevent them from walking, cycling and playing in their own neighbourhoods.

Sounding the alarm: Protecting children and young people from staff who abuse
A training film (video) and resource pack for all who work with young people and children. It shows how abuse of children by the staff who are supposed to care from them can be stopped – if everyone plays their part. Uses scenes of staff attempting to deal with suspected abuse to allow exploration of appropriate responses.

This booklet clearly sets out the argument against physical punishment of children. It states a practical case, as well as presenting the legal and moral sides of the issue.
