Frequently asked questions

Q. How can I best support my child?

A. Family surveys indicate that parents feel their strengths and skills are enhanced by Ravensdale’s interventions and few families receiving this service require their children to be looked after or need intensive social work support. Parents and carers gain competencies to better deal with problems and to support their children’s well being throughout life. These include the use of support systems, understanding of children’s needs at each stage of development, sense of confidence in supporting their children’s physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual needs, less stress as a parent or carer.

Q. How can I get my child to communicate?

A. We work closely with a speech and language therapist who advises staff and meets with parents. We provide visual structure to help children understand the daily routine plus alternative methods of communication (e.g. PECS) for those who need it.

Q. How long can my pre-school child stay at Ravensdale?

A. Initially children start at Ravensdale for a four term observation and assessment period. At the end of this time their progress is discussed at a review meeting and plans made for their future pre-school and/or school placements.

Q. Can my child continue to attend his/her other nursery/playgroup?

A. Many children successfully attend Ravensdale and a mainstream nursery or playgroup. We will offer advice and support to the other placement.
