North West
Barnardo’s in the North West provides vital services for more than 17,000 children, young people and their families across Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria. Our 32 community-based services across the North West provide a practical and positive response to problems like abuse, poverty, homelessness and the challenges of disability. Our work in the region is undertaken by more than 700 staff who are supported by around 1,500 volunteers. Much of our work would be impossible without the commitment and dedication of our fundraising team, as well as the staff and volunteers at our 47 shops across the region.
Barnardo’s works at the heart of social disadvantage and we’re proud of what we are achieving. We believe the lives of all children should be free from poverty, abuse and discrimination. That’s our vision. And while we can’t create a perfect world, we can work with the most vulnerable children and young people across the North West to help transform their lives and fulfil their potential.
The range of our services is diverse and reflects the many difficult circumstances children and young people find themselves in. We offer assistance and support to help them and their families overcome the problems facing them. For example:
- we provide therapy for children who have been abused and a lifeline service to protect young girls involved in prostitution
- we support young carers and help children facing bereavement
- our services for families with disabled children provide a range of support and activities and help them to access play and leisure facilities in the community
- our fostering services find families and individuals who will care for children with severe disabilities and for teenagers experiencing difficulties in their lives
- we support young people leaving care and those who are homeless
- we provide a range of support to children and families in their own communities, including playgroups, parenting education, individual work with children and self-help groups.

We also use our expertise and knowledge to campaign for better social policies and standards for child care for all children and young people so that many more than those with whom Barnardo’s works can reap the benefits.
The voices of children and young people - their views and perspectives – play a key role in shaping the development of our work. The statement ‘with children, for children’ is at the heart of our plans for the future,
Children only get one chance of a happy and secure childhood. Barnardo’s believes it is never too early or too late to help children have the chance of a better childhood and a future as happy and fulfilled adults.
