In response to today’s publication of the Government’s Action Plan for Adoption by Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove,
Release Date: 14 Mar 2012
Barnardo’s Lead Director for Children in Care, Jonathan Ewen, said:
Barnardo’s welcomes the Government‘s aim to speed up the time it takes to approve people looking to adopt. Assessing, training and approving potential adopters within just 6 months is a huge step forward.
In the past many people looking to adopt may have been put off by selection process that seemed overly bureaucratic and long-winded. Halving the time taken to approve adopters should go some way to halting the decline in the number of adoptions that we have seen over the last few years, and reduce the time that vulnerable children are kept waiting for a secure and loving family.
However, it’s important that the Government ensures that all new adopters are offered support for as long as they need it, not just for the first three years, as some may require extra help as children become teenagers.”
