Barnardo's response to SEN Green Paper

Release Date: 09 Mar 2011

Anne Marie Carrie, Barnardo's chief executive,

Barnardo’s is encouraged by the commitments laid out in today’s SEN Green Paper to make the system less adversarial for parents and improve teacher training.

"The new assessment process and holistic ‘Education, Health and Care’ plan could help banish the time, stress and money currently spent deciding whether children should or shouldn’t be labelled ‘SEN’. However, ultimately it is not the categorisation that matters, but how schools, parents and local services are supported to identify and respond to children’s needs.

"We are all aware that in these financially challenging times tough decisions have to be made, so we will be interested to see how the promising proposals in today’s paper will be made a reality.”
