Children's Champions Awards

The Children’s Champions Awards are a chance to recognise the amazing people who go beyond the call of duty to make a difference to the lives of children, their families and their communities.

The event is a partnership between the News of the World and Barnardo’s and this year it is being sponsored by the Royal Mail Group, with whom Barnardo’s has forged a three-year partnership.

On 4 March 2009, the sixth awards ceremony takes place at a top London hotel, where the winners of eight different categories, such as the children’s award, the 999 award and the Barnardo’s award, will receive their prizes from top celebrities.

The winner of each category will receive £5,000 in prize money and the overall winner will receive £10,000.

Dr David Barnardo, the great-great nephew of Thomas Barnardo, will be among the celebrity panel of judges.

Barnardo’s has been at the forefront of caring for young people for more than 100 years. We’ve campaigned heavily to end child poverty, changed the perception of children from being seen as child prostitutes but rather sexually exploited children, and currently, we’re calling for children at risk of getting into trouble not to be demonised but seen as children in great need of support.

The awards are a way to show how people who work with children or whose paths have crossed children’s have made a vast difference to their lives. This could be through an act of tremendous courage, bravery or just simply never giving up on them.

That's exactly what Children's Champions seeks to reward - ordinary people doing extraordinary things for some of the most vulnerable in our society - our children.
