Manchester United Star Darren Fletcher inspires Barnardo's Youngsters

Barnardo's supporter Darren Fletcher

Manchester United’s midfield maestro Darren Fletcher recently visited Barnardo’s Manchester Leaving Care to share his experiences with the young people using the service. Darren took part in a question and answer session with around 20 care leavers all aged between 16-21 years old. Many of the young people play on the project’s football team and were delighted to meet one of their heroes and hear about his achievements.

Simon Locke, Development Worker at Manchester Leaving Care said:

We were so pleased to welcome Darren to the service. When we told some of the young people that he was coming to visit there was a lot of jaw dropping and disbelief but they managed to contain their excitement to ask him some really good questions about his life and how he achieved his goals.

Darren added:

It was great to meet all the young people at MLC and find out more about the work Barnardo’s does here. I’m pleased that they enjoyed my visit and if I have inspired them to achieve their goals then I will be delighted. One of key things I wanted to get across to them is never let anybody tell you that you can’t achieve your dreams. I’ve worked really hard to get where I am and I am so fortunate that I live my dream every day. I wanted to let the young people at MLC know that they can do the same.
