The annual sponsored walk kicks off simultaneously in 15 locations around the country, with most walks beginning at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir temples. More than 4,000 people are expected to take part in this high profile event that takes place on the 18 April 2010.

BAPS Charities is the social services arm of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, one of the largest and most active Hindu organisations among the Indian diaspora in the UK. Recognised internationally for its humanitarian services, the work has year after year raised substantial amounts of money for charities in the UK.

Upon hearing of the event, Indian-born TV star and Barnardo’s ambassador Nina Wadia commented:

"I am delighted that Barnardo’s has been chosen as the official partner for this year’s BAPS sponsored walk. I have worked with Barnardo’s for nine years and have seen first hand the charity’s vital work with vulnerable children and families throughout the UK. This is a fantastic opportunity for families and friends to come together and have fun whilst raising essential funds for Barnardo’s.”

Participants can run, jog or walk the 10k distance. At the 5k mark, refreshments and children’s entertainment will be provided. On finishing the race, each participant is invited to partake in a vegetarian meal provided by BAPS Charities.

At the official launch of the event at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London, Barnardo’s UK Director of Fundraising, Martin Field said:

“Barnardo’s is thrilled to be working with BAPS Charities and to have been nominated this year as a beneficiary of their sponsored walk. The two organisations have much in common – in particular a belief in children and doing all that we can to ensure that they thrive.  Last year the walk raised over £25k.  We hope that this year we can raise even more for the most disadvantaged children and young people around the UK.”

Addressing BAPS Charities and its great work in the community, Martin said:

"We are honoured to be partnering with an organisation that has won a Queen’s Award for its work with children.”

BAPS Charities volunteer Kamlesh Patel added,

“We’re absolutely delighted to be working with Barnardo’s. Children have always been a big priority for us and we hope that as many people as possible can join us for what promises to be a wonderful, fun-filled event.”
