Trafficking rise: spotting the signs is vital

Release Date: 10 Aug 2017

Modern slavery and human trafficking in the UK is far more prevalent than previously thought, according to the National Crime Agency.

A growing body of evidence points to the numbers of victims being much higher than estimated, and the threat continuing to expand.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan said:

These new figures show the shocking scale of modern slavery in the UK but it’s important to remember that it does not only affect adults. Traffickers do not care how young their victims are and Barnardo’s has provided support to children of all ages, including babies who have been trafficked.

Trafficked children are some of the most vulnerable children in this country. They are often moved away from their family and friends, only to be exploited for someone else’s gain.

Barnardo’s supports trafficked children who have been sexually abused, used as cheap labour or domestic servants, or who have been forced to commit crimes. Our specialist support services help children understand what is happening with social care services, the police and immigration and support them to learn tools to stay safe, ensuring their voice is heard throughout.

It’s vital that professionals working with trafficked children get specialist training to understand their complex needs so they can spot the signs of trafficking and keep children safe. We work with public authorities to raise awareness of trafficking so more children can be protected.
