Sex and relationship education vital step closer

Release Date: 07 Mar 2017

We're delighted to report that MPs have today approved the Government’s amendment on Sex and Relationships Education in the Children and Social Work Bill.

This means compulsory sex and relationship education for all children is likely to become the law.

Responding to the news, our Chief Executive Javed Khan said:

“It’s great news that MPs have approved plans for compulsory age-appropriate school lessons on sex and healthy relationships in England to help keep children safe and develop supportive and positive relationships into adult life.

“Thank you to everyone across the country who joined the Barnardo’s campaign to make this happen.

“This education is vital to help children better understand what builds good relationships and the dangers in the real world and online.

“We believe this will give children the knowledge and skills they need to help prevent them being groomed and sexually exploited.”
