Plans to cut housing benefit compromise vulnerable youngsters

Release Date: 27 May 2015

Barnardo’s has today criticised the government’s ‘rash’ plans, outlined in the Queen's speech, to remove housing benefit from young people. They warn that they risk forcing the most vulnerable to stay in unstable households or make themselves homeless.

CEO Javed Khan comments:

“These rash plans risk compromising 118,000 vulnerable young people, forcing many to choose between staying on in unstable homes or becoming homeless.

“Day in day out,  Barnardo’s works with young people who are scarred by growing up in abusive or substance misusing households. Housing benefit is a lifeline that gives these youngsters a fresh start, so it’s deeply worrying that the Government is severing it.

“This benefit must remain available for the UK’s most vulnerable to fall back on, if we are not to see a generation of disadvantaged young people plunged into destitution.”
