Plaistow pop superstar Mumzy Stranger delves into Barnardo’s rich east London archive

Release Date: 30 May 2018

Chart-topping British Bangladeshi singer and producer is taking part in FastForADay campaign during Ramadan

Mumzy Stranger looks thruogh the archive at Barnardo's Making Connections service

Award-winning British Muslim pop superstar Mumzy Stranger took a dive into the Barnardo’s archive in his home neighbourhood of Plaistow as part of a Ramadan campaign to support the UK’s leading children’s charity.

Mumzy, who has topped the UK Asian Charts and was named Asian Artist of the Year at the 2017 Urban Music Awards, wanted to find out more about Barnardo’s history in east London after joining #FastForADay, an influencer-driven campaign to raise awareness of Barnardo’s work in the British Muslim and wider BAME communities.

On Friday, May 25 he met the team at the Making Connections service in Balaam Street, Plaistow, which holds the records of nearly 500,000 children and young people who have been supported by Barnardo’s throughout its 152-year history, including BAME young children who have been supported by the charity since Victorian times. Making Connections also works to support adults who grew up in care through Barnardo’s and connect them with family members.

Mumzy said:

I’ve walked past the service in Plaistow thousands of times and I’ve known about Barnardo's since I was a child, but I never realised just how many children and young people have been helped by the charity over the years. It was amazing to that nearly half a million records are kept in the archive, and that Barnardo’s has been helping BAME young people in east London since the very early days, and I’m really happy to support the charity’s #FastForADay campaign.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan, said:

Fast For A Day is showcasing what the month of Ramadan means for hundreds of thousands of families, households and individuals throughout the UK. It’s fantastic to see Mumzy Stranger and other popular British Asians of all faiths come together to support Barnardo’s during Ramadan and our Time For Family campaign.
