People’s Postcode Trust grant will help teenagers build skills through Barnardo’s

Release Date: 27 Sep 2017

A Barnardo’s programme supporting scores of teenagers from Tower Hamlets and Hackney has been given a 20,000 funding boost from the People’s Postcode Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The grant will help the children’s charity train young people in construction and related skills and techniques at The Hub Skills Centre in Stepney Green, with up to 70 teenagers set to benefit over two years.

It will go towards The Hub’s work with 14-18-year-olds who live in the two boroughs and are at risk of becoming NEET – not in education, employment or training – helping them gain qualifications so they can get a foothold in the industry and work towards a positive future.

Students who are supported by the Barnardo’s team will also learn maths and English, gain qualifications and benefit from the pastoral care which The Hub team provides, working with each young person to understand their individual needs and challenges.

The funding will also go towards refurbishing parts of the centre and training staff in conflict management techniques.

Lynn Gradwell, Director of Barnardo’s in London, said:

We’re so grateful to the People’s Postcode Trust and the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery for this generous grant, which will help our Barnardo’s team at The Hub connect with more teenagers in east London and enable these young people to build the skills they need to get a good start in early adulthood.

Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said:

I’m delighted that funding from our players is going to make such a big difference through Barnardo’s programme.

As a charity lottery, a minimum of 31 percent of ticket sales goes directly to charities. Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised more than £229 million to date for more than 3,000 good causes across Great Britain and internationally.
