Nursery children joined by Teletubby Po for Barnardo’s 20th Big Toddle

Children at an east London nursery were motivated to set out on another fundraising expedition for Barnardo’s following a personal visit by one of the Teletubbies.

Po, a favourite from the children’s TV show, dropped in to Peter Pan’s Day Nursery in Barkingside as the under-fives began their 15th annual Big Toddle on August 31.

Dozens of children took part in the challenge, waving to Po as they set off along Thomas Barnardo Way and on to the village green, next to the head office and historic home of the children’s charity.

They are among thousands of children around the UK who have taken part in the 20th anniversary of the Big Toddle, raising vital funds to help Barnardo’s support more of the most vulnerable children, young people and families. More than £14m has been raised through the Big Toddle since it launched.

Peter Pan’s adventurers were joined by parents, carers and staff from the nursery and Barnardo’s, and were rewarded with medals after completing one or two laps of the green. There was also a raffle with Teletubbies-themed prizes.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan, said:

The children and the team at Peter Pan’s Day Nursery have put in an outstanding effort this year just as in previous years, and we’re so thankful for all that they’ve done.

It’s only through the passion and commitment of community organisers that events like the Big Toddle are possible and for 20 years, their incredible dedication has been making a real difference to vulnerable children, young people and families. On behalf of Barnardo’s, I want to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone around the UK who continues to make this campaign such a success.

Huge thanks also to our supporters, DHX Brands and Louis Kennedy, for the fantastic Teletubbies collaboration this year.

We had a fantastic day, everyone really enjoyed themselves and the children had lots of fun. We’ve been organising Big Toddles for Barnardo’s for the past 14 years and it was wonderful to be able to do it again on the 20th anniversary, especially with one of the Teletubbies cheering us on.
