Early intervention is key to tackling mental health issues

Release Date: 27 Oct 2017

A Care Quality Commission report into the state of children's mental health services in England released today (October 27) has found serious failings.

Chief Executive Javed Khan says action needs to be taken so children get the help they need quickly.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan said:

Our experience of working with children with mental health problems shows that early intervention is key.

Barnardo’s services work with schools and other agencies to ensure children get the right support at the right time.

Intensive community mental health support should be available for every child who requires it regardless of where they live, to prevent their issues escalating and avoid them being admitted to hospital.

The Government must end the postcode lottery of care, so if a child does need inpatient mental health treatment they receive it in a timely fashion.
