Culture Secretary challenges social media giants
Release Date: 20 Apr 2017
The Culture Secretary, Karen Bradley has challenged social media giants, including Twitter and Facebook to do more to keep children safe online.
Karen Bradley met technology firms as part of the Government's Internet Safety Strategy which is focused on addressing issues such as sexting and cyber bullying.
In response to this meeting, Barnardo's Chief Executive, Javed Khan, said:
We fully support the Government’s work to get social media giants to do more to keep children safe online. Tech firms, service providers and those producing apps also have a responsibility to consider how their content can negatively affect young users.
We want the Government to ensure that the new relationships and sex education lessons starting in 2019 include information on how to tackle the risks and dangers on the internet. Children must be taught how to develop the skills and resilience to navigate the digital world.
