Celebrity surprise at awards ceremony for fostered and adopted children

Release date: 29 Nov 2015

An awards ceremony for fostered and adopted children from across the West Midlands was attended by a celebrity guest.

Actress Martha Howe-Douglas, who appeared in ‘Horrible Histories’ and more recently ‘Doctor Foster’, joined Barnardo’s at the Copthorne Hotel in Dudley.

She presented certificates to local children and young people to celebrate their achievements over the past year.

The event was followed by karaoke and a disco, as well as the opportunity for young ones to meet ‘Santa’.

Guests could also enter a raffle with prizes which included signed memorabilia from Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion.

Each of the children also received a goody bag including gifts from Tesco, Argos and local businesses.

The event was organised by Barnardo’s West Midlands Family Placement Service and Barnardo’s Adoption Midlands.

Operations manager Marcia Briscoe said:

“This was the fourth year that we’ve arranged a celebration for all of the families who have been supported by our service. It was attended by almost 150 carers, children and staff who all enjoyed a lovely afternoon which brought people together and encouraged them to share their experiences.

Awards are presented to every fostered and adopted child, and the sons and daughters of the families who care for them. Parents and carers nominate each child for a special award. This could be for doing well at school, excelling at sport or taking part in other activities.

We were particularly pleased to welcome Martha Howe-Douglas who presented the certificates and praised the children for their individual achievements, and are sincerely grateful to the Copthorne Hotel for generously providing the venue free of charge.”

Aside from appearing in ‘Horrible Histories’ and ‘Doctor Foster’, Martha is also known for roles in daytime soap ‘Doctors’ and Sky1's hit Comedy ‘Yonderland'.

She said:

“I was delighted to be invited to attend such a fun awards ceremony and a celebration of Barnardo’s support for fostered and adopted children..”
