British children trafficked for exploitation across the UK

Release Date: 26 Mar 2018

Following the National Crime Agency's report highlighting how record numbers of Britons are being flagged up as potential victims of slavery, Barnardo's has issued the following statement.

Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan said:

These NCA figures reflect what we have been seeing in our frontline trafficking services; British children are being trafficked for sexual and criminal exploitation across the UK.

Trafficked children are controlled by their traffickers, who exploit them for their own gain so it’s crucial that children who have been forced to commit crimes are identified and treated as victims and not criminalised.

It’s encouraging to see that more potential trafficking victims are being identified and referred into the NRM; we are growing more confident in spotting the signs of modern slavery and exploitation. But we must all remain vigilant and it’s vital that professionals working with children get specialist training so they can quickly identify trafficked children and young people from all nationalities, refer them into the NRM and keep them safe.

The government’s Independent Child Trafficking Advocates Service, provided by Barnardo’s, works tirelessly for trafficked children as they start to re-build their lives after exploitation. The national roll out of this service will enable essential support for all trafficked children across country.
