Ben’s marathon bid inspired by partner’s work at Barnardo’s London service

Release Date: 16 Apr 2018

An electrician is powering up for his first Virgin Money London Marathon after pledging to raise vital funds for Barnardo’s.

Ben England is running the London Marathon fro Barnardo's

Ben England has been training hard for the event on Sunday, April 22, taking on the hills of south Croydon and venturing into the city up to six times a week.

The 30-year-old from Lansdowne Road, who carries out electrical inspections of Young’s pubs all over London, is buzzing at the prospect of raising funds for Barnardo’s, where his partner Kim works supporting families with children who have disabilities through the Sutton Short Breaks service, based in Crystal Palace, south London.

Ben said:

Kim works for Barnardo’s helping children with disabilities and their families, so I feel I really understand some of the challenges those families face. My own nephew is autistic and I wanted to run for a cause that’s close to my heart.

“I’ve done a half-marathon before but this will be my first full marathon. The training has been quite difficult because Purley is at the bottom of a valley and to get anywhere you have to run up a hill, but I’m going out training five or six times a week and I’m looking forward to it. I do it in less than 3hrs 45mins I’ll be really pleased.

By running for Barnardo’s, Ben and his fellow runners with raise around £250,000 help Barnardo’s support the UK’s most vulnerable children and young people, including those who are just leaving care or have experienced child sexual exploitation.

Lynn Gradwell, Director of Barnardo’s in London, said:

It’s fantastic that Ben has been so inspired by the brilliant work that Kim and her colleagues at Barnardo’s Sutton Short Breaks service do every day to support children with disabilities and their families in south London. The funds he raises will enable us to do even more to help children, young people and families, and I want to thank Ben for his support and wish him the best of luck.
