Barnardo's welcomes call for Government-led early intervention strategy

Release Date: 14 Nov 2018

Barnardo's is backing the Science and Technology Committee's report which highlights the importance of early intervention and calls for a Government-led national strategy.

The committee is urging the Government to capitalise fully on the opportunity that early intervention transform the lives of those who suffer adversity in childhood, while also saving long-term costs to Government.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan said:

Barnardo’s has repeatedly called for greater focus on early intervention, so that children get the support they need as soon as possible. Far too often families are left until they reach crisis point before they can access help.

We welcome the Science and Technology Committee’s call for a national early intervention strategy. To be successful there must be leadership from across national Government and incentives for local agencies to work together - sharing expertise, data and resource.

Any strategy must also be underpinned by specific funding, so we urge the Government to use next year’s Comprehensive Spending Review to create a fund for early intervention. This will help local areas deliver the services children need to maximise their chance of a positive future.
