Barnardo's welcomes 1m of Home Office funding to boost the fight against knife crime.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan said:

Barnardo’s welcomes today’s announcement of £1m of Home Office funding to boost the fight against knife crime.

Our frontline workers in London see first-hand the devastating effects of knife crime on children and young people and we are working closely with members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on knife crime to look at ways to tackle serious violence and criminal exploitation of children.

We look forward to working closely with government to help reduce knife and gun crime. We want to see a concerted effort to prevent violence among young people and understand the causes that lie behind it - whether those are disrupted family lives, school exclusions, early criminal convictions or traumatic early experiences.

Barnardo’s already provides the ‘YouTurn’ anti-gangs project in the south London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Croydon to support children and young people at risk of being involved in gangs and violent crime.

We know that cases of child exploitation by criminal gangs are complex and it is vital that child criminal exploitation victims receive early and specialist help they need.
