Barnardo's responds to NHS 10 year plan

Release Date: 07 Jan 2019

The Government must not underestimate the scale of the challenge in tackling England's mental health crisis, Barnardo's has warned.

The head of the UK's leading children's charity made the comments following the unveiling of the NHS 10 year plan.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan said:

Barnardo’s has long warned of a crisis in children’s mental health. The Government has now acknowledged this challenge, and the new NHS 10-year plan promises to put in place the building blocks needed to turn it around.

We particularly welcome the focus on early intervention, as no child should have to reach crisis point before getting the help they need.

But as one in eight 5 to 19 year olds have at least one mental health condition, and three in four children needing support do not have access to it, this will not be an easy task. The Government must not underestimate the scale of the challenge and the need for sufficient resource now and in years to come.
