Barnardo’s welcomes report on child criminal exploitation

Release Date: 14 Nov 2018

Barnardo’s has welcomed a report on child criminal exploitation, which has been released by Ofsted and others.

The report is from inspectorates Ofsted, HMI Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS), the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and HMI Probation, and calls on agencies not to underestimate the risk of child criminal exploitation in their areas.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed Khan said:

Children across the UK are at risk from multiple and increasingly complex dangers, including sexual and criminal exploitation.

These risks affect all children – irrespective of class or privilege. Any child can be vulnerable.

The report is right to emphasise training for frontline staff, so that children who are being exploited are identified as victims, rather than treated as criminals. Young people who have been coerced into criminal activity must receive specialist support to recover from past harm, make safe choices, and work towards a positive future.

No one agency can tackle the threats facing children alone. At Barnardo’s we work in partnership with police, schools, health and local authorities, sharing resource and expertise, so that children can get the support they need when they need it.
