Barnardo’s responds to Government’s Victims Strategy

Release Date: 10 Sep 2018

The Victims Strategy is a welcome development by the Government because it is vital that all victims are understood, supported and protected in their journey through the criminal criminal justice system.

In response to the Government's announcement, Barnardo's Chief Executive Javed Khan said:

Barnardo’s welcomes the Government’s Victim’s Strategy as an opportunity to improve how the most vulnerable victims- especially those who have suffered child sexual abuse- are treated by the Justice system.

We are particularly delighted that the Government will overhaul the previously unfair Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS), making it fit for purpose and removing the unjust and illogical ‘same roof’ rule, which denied victims compensation if they lived in the same home as their abuser.

In our 2017 Journey to Justice report, we called for every victim of child sexual abuse to have a single dedicated practitioner throughout their whole case. We will be looking to the review of Victims Code to ensure every child gets the dedicated support they need.

We also welcome plans to consult on the establishment of an Independent Public Advocate (IPA), but it must come with sufficient resourcing, so we can avoid a postcode lottery. With the right timely support victims can achieve a positive future.
