Release Date: 07 Apr 2017

Volunteers are needed to help repair, repaint and rejuvenate centres as part of a England-wide volunteering event.

Barnardo's is asking everyone to pitch in and help out on May 4, 5 and 6 with dozens of opportunities at services across London, including four centres in Brent. All ages are welcome and there is a particular focus on recruiting those aged 50 and over.

Volunteers are needed to help paint the grounds and play equipment in bright colours, create murals and revamp the gardens at St Raphael’s Children’s Centre in Rainsborough Close, Brent Park. Others will be asked to work on the garden, put together outdoor play equipment and help refurbish the office at Hope Children’s Centre in Warm Lane, Cricklewood.

Barnardo’s is also recruiting volunteers to clear and tidy an overgrown space so it can be used for picnics at Granville Plus Children’s Centre in Carlton Vale, Kilburn, and to help create a new picnic area and paint an inside mural at the Freeman Family Centre in Longstone Avenue, Harlesden.

Further placements are also on offer at other services across London including The Triangle in Crystal Palace, Bow Nursery in Bromley-by-Bow and The Hub Skills Centre in Stepney Green.

Lynn Gradwell, Director of Barnardo’s in London, said:

This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for people to get involved in Barnardo’s first big volunteering event.

We’d like Londoners to roll up their sleeves, pick up paintbrushes and get their hands messy to really brighten up the places where we support local families. Just a few hours of your time will make a big difference to the experience of children, parents and carers who use these centres in the months and years ahead.

Barnardo’s is especially keen to hear from people aged 50 and over who would like to volunteer but would be delighted to receive applications from all age groups.

To find out about giving your time and to sign up please visit the website www.barnardos.org.uk/volunteering_in_may_2017 before April 17 to be matched to an opportunity in your area. If you have any questions please email volunteeringdayinmay@barnardos.org.uk. Barnardo’s volunteering team will be in touch in the week commencing April 24 to confirm places.
